The Assignment Process

Assignments to Graduate Student Housing are made in the order in which the completed applications are received. Certain types of housing particularly unfurnished one-bedroom units are quite limited, so you are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Placement depends on the date of application, apartment availability, and your requested move-in date.

Whenever possible, we will assign you to the highest of your indicated choices. You may include any special requests on your application form. If you have not received your assignment by the first week of September, please contact us to determine the status of your application.

How to Apply

You may use the application form on this page to apply for Graduate Student Apartments, New Graduate Residence Hall, or International House.

Single students sharing apartments are housed only in buildings 18, 20, 25, 26, and 28.

To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the entire application form, including your preferences.
  2. Mail the completed application with a $300 deposit in the form of a check or money order payable to The University of Chicago.
Please note that your application will be delayed if you do not return the form and deposit in the same envelope.
  3. If you would like us to acknowledge the receipt of your application, please provide us with your e-mail address.

Signing Your Lease and Moving In:

When you arrive on campus, you must sign your lease and make your initial payment in person at the Graduate Student Housing Office during regular business hours.

If you plan to enter the University in Autumn Quarter, you will typically be offered a twelve-month lease from September through August. You may arrange to take occupancy of your unit earlier, beginning in late June.

Your lease will expire on August 31 of the following year, even if it begins in the month other than September. If you do not register for Summer Quarter, you may vacate your apartment without penalty at the end of the academic year if you give the required written notice as outlined in the lease.

Please talk to the Graduate Student Housing Office about your needs; arrangements are flexible.

Your lease and rent will start on your requested move-in date.
