The most modern facility available to University of Chicago graduate students, the New Graduate Residence Hall (NGRH) is home to more than 120 students. NGRH is open only during the academic year; it is closed during the summer quarter. Designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the three-story building is illuminated inside through large windows set in from an overhanging roof. Its spacious lobby has the feel of a luxury apartment building Rooms -- most of them singles with private bathrooms -- are well removed from these common areas, and include newer maple wood furniture, carpet, University telephone and internet connections and optional cable television. Students may prepare their own meals in a large common kitchen, which has many stoves and refrigerators and individual dry storage bins. Residents may purchase an optional meal plan to eat at specified campus dining halls . There are conference rooms for group study, a well-equipped exercise room, two music rooms with pianos and wireless access in most common areas. The NGRH is two blocks from the Law School and close to rail and bus lines. It is located on the Midway Plaisance, a long grassy parkway designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1871 that is a popular site for informal and organized sports activities. A new permanent year-round skating rink and warming house are part of a revitalization project that is adding improved athletic fields, gardens, landscaping, and lighting to an already popular park area. Public festivals and concerts are also scheduled on the Midway.
