When you come to live in Chicago, you'll
find a city that's diverse and vital, rich in culture and ethnic heritage.
And nowhere is that more true than in Chicago's best-known neighborhood
- Hyde Park-Kenwood, home of the University of Chicago.
The neighborhood is largely residential,
with Victorian houses, stately brownstones, townhouses, and apartment
buildings of all sizes. Several shopping areas offer a full range
of amenities - and probably the best selection of new and used books
in the country.
Tennis courts are located throughout the
tree-lined neighborhood, and there are two full-service health clubs
in addition to the University's athletic facilities. In summer you
can swim in Lake Michigan; it's a brief stroll away. If you like to
jog, there are indoor and outdoor tracks, or you can run along the
lakefront with dozens of others who get out early in the morning or
after work, dodging bicyclists and rollerskaters as they go.
Public and private schools, day-care and
pre-school centers are available to parents all over the community.
Chicago's downtown business district, the
Loop, is easily accessible by bus, train, and expressway from Hyde
Park-Kenwood, as are the Near North Side entertainment district and
other sections of the metropolitan area.
Affordable rental housing in a community
like Hyde Park-Kenwood can be tough to find. But don't get discouraged.
The University has a larger pool of good rental housing than almost
any other university in the country, and a variety that recognizes
every student's needs and preferences regarding location, cost, and
facilities.
