Housing for Graduate Students

The University of Chicago is located in a unique residential neighborhood within the city of Chicago--Hyde Park. As a graduate student at the University, you may take advantage of the University's large pool of affordable and conveniently located housing in the Hyde Park community. This page describes the choices that are available to you through the Graduate Student Housing system and contains the information you will need to apply for housing.

Nearly all of the University's students and over 60 percent of its faculty and staff live in the campus neighborhood. This makes for a very special sense of community and a lively intellectual atmosphere that complements the academic experience.

Three broad categories of housing are available through the University:

  • Graduate Student Housing. More than 1,300 units in thirty-one apartment buildings are owned and operated by the University, with a wide variety of apartment sizes, designs, and rates.
  • New Graduate Residence Hall. The University's only graduate residence hall is open only during the academic year. It is closed summer quarter.
  • International House. This residence provides housing and program facilities for up to 500 students and scholars, half of whom are from over fifty other countries.

All units are within walking distance of the University's quadrangles and are on or near campus bus routes. Both furnished and unfurnished units are available; please read more about your choices in the following pages.

You may locate these housing options using the graduate student housing list in conjunction with the map.

With this information, you will be able to select the type of housing that will best meet your needs. The demand for our housing units is high, so you are encouraged to apply early for the best success in obtaining your choice.

It's to Your Advantage

Several buidlings have fenced yards, and all are near one of many playlots or parks.

Near the shore of Lake Michigan and close to downtown Chicago, the University is located in a prime real estate market where private housing opportunities may be difficult to find or costly. Compared to other universities in the country, the University of Chicago offers a particularly large pool of good rental housing, with a variety that recognizes the needs and preferences of most students for location, cost, and facilities.

Some buildings have limited off-street parking available at nominal rates. Each has a laundry room.

Not only are all units within walking distance of the University, they are also served by campus and/or public bus service both day and night.

Several buildings have fenced yards, and all are near one of the many playlots or parks in Hyde Park. The buildings frequently have informal networks for babysitting, carpooling, and learning exchanges.

All building entrances are secure. City of Chicago Police service in the community is augmented by regular patrols by the University of Chicago Police.

All buildings are clean and well-maintained. Each building is overseen by an area office that employs professional property management staff and a maintenance team.
